Quick answer

What is working at height training?

Working at height training prepares staff to recognise the hazards of work at height and to take the precautions the law requires. KeyOstas delivers it in half a day at your premises, with an optional hands-on session on selecting, fitting and using a safety harness.

Built around the Work at Height Regulations 2005
Covers the hierarchy of control: avoid, prevent, then minimise
Optional practical: selecting, fitting and using a harness
Certificate of attendance for every delegate
Falls from height remain one of the biggest causes of serious and fatal workplace injury. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require work at height to be properly planned, supervised and carried out by competent people, following a clear hierarchy: avoid working at height where you can, prevent a fall where you cannot, and minimise the distance and consequences of a fall where a risk remains. This course gives staff and supervisors that grounding, and the option to add a hands-on harness session for teams who use personal fall protection.

Is it right for you

Is working at height training right for your team?

It is for the people who work above ground level, and those who supervise them.

Right for you if…

Your staff work at height as part of their job
You have supervisors responsible for work at height
You want a team that understands the hierarchy of control
Your team uses harnesses and personal fall protection (choose the harness option)
You are inducting new starters or refreshing existing staff

A different course fits better if…

You need to train people to erect mobile access towers: see Mobile Tower Scaffold
You only need staff to inspect ladders: see Ladder Inspection training
You want a regulated, accredited qualification: this is a certificate of attendance

FAQ

Working at height training: frequently asked questions

Is working at height training a legal requirement?
The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require that everyone involved in work at height is competent. Training is how employers make their staff competent, so it is the standard way of meeting that duty.
How long is the course?
Half a day. Both the awareness-only session and the version with the practical harness session take the same half day.
What is the difference between the two options?
Both cover the same working-at-height syllabus. The harness option adds a hands-on session on selecting, fitting, clipping on and pre-use checking a safety harness.
Is there a minimum height for the regulations to apply?
No. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 apply to any work at height where a person could fall a distance liable to cause injury, including at or below ground level in some cases.
What is the hierarchy of control for work at height?
It is the order of priority in the regulations: avoid work at height where reasonably practicable, prevent a fall where you cannot avoid the work, and minimise the distance and consequences of a fall where a risk remains.
Do we need our own harnesses for the practical?
The harness session can use training equipment or your own harnesses. Using your own equipment means staff train on the kit they will actually use.
How often should working at height training be refreshed?
There is no fixed legal interval, but it should be refreshed periodically and whenever the work, the equipment or the team changes.
Do delegates get a certificate?
Yes. Every delegate receives a KeyOstas certificate of attendance on completion.
