Quick answer

What is overhead crane training?

Overhead crane training prepares operators to use an overhead or gantry crane safely — pendant, radio or cab-controlled — to lift and move loads. It is delivered in-company under LOLER, PUWER and BS 7121, with an ITSSAR-accredited or KeyOstas in-house certificate on successful assessment.

Novice, experienced and refresher levels

Overhead cranes lift heavy loads above the workforce, so competent operation is essential. LOLER governs lifting equipment and operations, PUWER requires adequate training, and BS 7121 is the code of practice for safe crane use. The course covers the crane and its controls, pre-use checks, load handling, slinging and signalling, and safe operation. KeyOstas delivers it in-company on your own crane.

A theory test covering the law, crane knowledge, load handling and safe operation.

PRACTICAL

Practical assessment

A practical test of pre-use checks and load handling, assessed on the crane.

On passing, operators receive an ITSSAR-accredited certificate (with TOPS registration) or a KeyOstas in-house certificate — both delivered to the LOLER and BS 7121 standard.

FAQ

Overhead Crane Training — frequently asked questions

Is overhead crane training a legal requirement?
LOLER and PUWER require that anyone operating lifting equipment is competent and adequately trained. Overhead crane training is how employers meet that duty; BS 7121 is the recognised code of practice.
Does the course cover pendant and radio-controlled cranes?
Yes. The course covers overhead and gantry cranes operated by pendant, radio remote or cab — tell us which your operators use.
Do I need an ITSSAR-accredited certificate, or is in-house enough?
Both are valid. An ITSSAR-accredited certificate is independently verifiable and TOPS-registered; a KeyOstas in-house certificate is delivered to the same standard. Choose based on what your sites and clients ask for.
How long is the course?
Typically one to two days for a novice operator, and around one day for an experienced operator or refresher. Duration flexes with candidate numbers.
Does it cover slinging and signalling?
The course covers attaching loads and recognised signals as part of safe crane operation. For dedicated slinger/signaller duties, see our slinger signaller course.
How often is refresher training needed?
HSE and ITSSAR recommend refresher training every three to five years, and sooner after an incident or a change of crane or duties.
Can you train on our own crane at our site?
Yes. All KeyOstas overhead crane training is delivered in-company, on your own crane, in your real working environment.
