The Qualification

What is the NEBOSH Diploma?

A Level 6 qualification for senior H&S leaders

Level 6GradIOSH routeCMIOSH path3 units (DN1 · DN2 · DN3)
Designed for senior H&S managers, advisors and consultants ready to step up to a strategic role.

The NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (also known as the NEBOSH National Diploma) is a Level 6 qualification, recognised by IOSH as meeting the academic requirement for Graduate Membership (GradIOSH) and the established route to Chartered (CMIOSH) status.

Employers across construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, logistics, healthcare and the public sector list the NEBOSH Diploma as a preferred or required qualification for senior safety roles. The qualification is delivered across three units (DN1, DN2 and DN3), combining technical knowledge, applied risk management and a workplace-based assignment. The full NEBOSH Diploma course can be studied face-to-face, live virtual or in-company.

Is the NEBOSH Diploma right for you?

The NEBOSH Diploma is the right next step if you:

  • Already hold the NEBOSH General Certificate (or an equivalent Level 3 qualification) and want to move into a senior or strategic role.
  • Are responsible for compliance, risk or culture at a site, regional or organisational level.
  • Are preparing for senior H&S leadership — H&S Manager, Head of Safety, HSE Director or independent consultant.
  • Want a recognised stepping stone toward an MSc in Occupational Health & Safety or Chartered (CMIOSH) status with IOSH.

Not sure yet? If you’re newer to the profession, the NEBOSH General Certificate is the recognised starting point and a prerequisite-equivalent for the Diploma.

What you will be able to do

By the end of the NEBOSH National Diploma you’ll be operating as the senior health & safety voice in the room — confident on strategy, the technical detail and the business case.

NEBOSH Diploma — Frequently Asked Questions

Is the NEBOSH Diploma equivalent to a degree?

Yes. The NEBOSH National Diploma is a Level 6 qualification on the UK Regulated Qualifications Framework, which is the same level as a UK bachelor’s degree (e.g. BSc/BA). It is one of the most respected occupational health and safety qualifications globally.

How long does the NEBOSH Diploma take to complete?

Most learners complete the Diploma in 12–24 months, depending on study mode and time available. Expect roughly 460–540 study hours across the three taught units plus the workplace research project.

How hard is the NEBOSH Diploma?

It is a demanding Level 6 qualification — substantially more in-depth than the General Certificate, with three exam units and a workplace research project. With structured tutor support, most experienced practitioners pass.

Do I need the NEBOSH General Certificate before the Diploma?

It is not strictly mandatory, but holding the NEBOSH General Certificate (or an equivalent Level 3 H&S qualification) is strongly recommended. Most learners find the Diploma significantly easier with that grounding.

How much does the NEBOSH Diploma cost?

Pricing depends on study mode (online, distance or classroom). See our Learning options above for current KeyOstas pricing — many employers fund the Diploma in full as part of professional development.

Can I study the NEBOSH Diploma online?

Yes. KeyOstas offers the NEBOSH Diploma fully online, distance learning and classroom-based, with the same NEBOSH-accredited content and tutor support across all modes.

Is the NEBOSH Diploma recognised internationally?

Yes. NEBOSH qualifications are recognised in over 130 countries and are routinely listed by global employers in oil & gas, construction, pharma, manufacturing and the public sector.

What jobs can I get with a NEBOSH Diploma?

Typical roles include Health & Safety Manager, Senior H&S Advisor, HSE Manager, Head of H&S and independent H&S Consultant. The Diploma is the qualification most senior H&S job adverts ask for.

What is the pass rate for the NEBOSH Diploma?

NEBOSH publishes pass-rate data per unit each year, and rates vary by unit and sitting. KeyOstas learners consistently achieve above-average pass rates thanks to our tutor-led support and exam coaching.

Does the NEBOSH Diploma lead to Chartered status?

The Diploma supports Graduate IOSH membership (GradIOSH) and is the recognised academic route toward CMIOSH (Chartered Member of IOSH) once you complete IOSH’s Initial Professional Development.

What is the difference between NEBOSH and IOSH?

NEBOSH awards qualifications (Certificate, Diploma); IOSH is the professional membership body for H&S practitioners. Most professionals hold a NEBOSH qualification and pursue IOSH membership for chartered status.

Can my employer pay for the NEBOSH Diploma?

Most KeyOstas Diploma learners are employer-funded as part of professional development. We can issue a quote, invoice the company directly, and split payment across financial years where helpful.

When are the next NEBOSH Diploma exam sittings?

KeyOstas runs rolling enrolment on the NEBOSH National Diploma — you can start whenever you’re ready and book the next available NEBOSH exam window. NEBOSH open-book exam sittings run several times a year, and our tutors help you align your study plan with the sitting that best fits your schedule. Get in touch and we’ll confirm the next available dates.

What is your cancellation and refund policy for the NEBOSH Diploma?

You can cancel and receive a full refund up to 30 days before your course start date. After that point we’ll happily discuss transferring you to a later cohort wherever possible. The full terms are confirmed in your booking email — our team can also walk you through the policy before you enrol.

Is the NEBOSH Diploma RQF Level 6, and does it count toward CPD?

Yes. The NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is a Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) Level 6 qualification, equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree. It also counts as continuing professional development (CPD) for IOSH and IIRSM members, and supports progression toward chartered status (CMIOSH) once paired with the required experience.
