About CITB Site Safety Plus training

CITB Site Safety Plus is the recognised scheme of site safety courses for the UK construction industry, developed by the Construction Industry Training Board. The two core courses are the Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS), for those with site management responsibility, and the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS), for site supervisors, foremen and team leaders.

Both courses cover the health, safety, welfare and environmental duties of the role, set against the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and current HSE guidance. They are widely required by principal contractors before a manager or supervisor can take up a role on site.

KeyOstas has trained UK construction workforces since 1984. All four courses are available in-company, delivered at your premises for a group of your staff, or as scheduled courses.

Frequently asked

CITB Site Safety Plus questions

What is CITB Site Safety Plus?

Site Safety Plus is the scheme of site safety courses run under the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) for the UK construction industry. It includes the SMSTS and SSSTS courses and their refreshers.

What is the difference between SMSTS and SSSTS?

SMSTS, the Site Management Safety Training Scheme, is for those with site management responsibility, such as site managers and project managers. SSSTS, the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme, is for site supervisors, foremen and team leaders. SMSTS is the more advanced, longer course.

How long are CITB Site Safety Plus certificates valid?

Five years. A refresher course must be completed before the certificate expires to renew it for a further five years.

What happens if my certificate expires?

If a Site Safety Plus certificate is allowed to lapse, the refresher cannot be used and the full course (SMSTS or SSSTS) must be taken again. It is important to book the refresher before the expiry date.

Can the courses be delivered at our site?

Yes. All four courses are available in-company, delivered by a KeyOstas tutor at your premises for a group of your staff, anywhere in the UK, or attended as scheduled courses.
