The safety challenge

The safety challenge in construction

A construction training manager is judged on whether teams are competent, card-ready and compliant before work starts. These are the pressures the page below is built around.

Working at height

Falls from height remain the single biggest cause of fatal injury in UK construction. Every elevated task needs competent planning, the right equipment and competent supervision.Work at Height Regulations 2005

CDM duties on every project

The CDM Regulations place legal duties on every dutyholder. Principal contractors must be able to show their teams are competent, briefed and properly managed.Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015

Card-gated site access

Sites are gated by cards. CSCS, and the SMSTS and SSSTS scheme for managers and supervisors, are increasingly demanded by clients before a team can mobilise.CITB Site Safety Plus and CSCS

High-risk site activities

Excavation, lifting operations, abrasive wheels, scaffold and tower work each carry their own competence expectations that a client or principal-contractor audit will check.PUWER, LOLER and sector good practice

Case study

A multi-site SMSTS and SSSTS rollout for a tier-one contractor

Problem
A principal contractor needed 48 site managers and supervisors card-ready before a major project mobilised, spread across four sites and tied to a fixed start date eleven weeks away.
Solution
KeyOstas proposed a full schedule of dates within 24 hours, then ran in-company SMSTS and SSSTS courses across the contractor sites, worked to the mobilisation date rather than fixed public dates, and handled CITB registration and card processing end to end.
Outcome
All 48 managers and supervisors were certified two weeks before mobilisation, the project started on schedule, and the client pre-qualification audit passed first time.

We needed teams card-ready before we could set foot on site. KeyOstas came back with dates inside a day, worked to our mobilisation date, and handled the CITB paperwork so we did not have to.

Why KeyOstas

Why construction employers train with KeyOstas

01

Trainers who have worked on site

Construction courses are led by tutors who have worked on live sites, not career trainers reading from a textbook. The examples come from real projects.

02

Every site-safety scheme, one provider

CITB SMSTS and SSSTS, SPA, CCNSG and NEBOSH from a single provider, with one point of contact for the whole programme.

03

Delivery around your mobilisation dates

In-company courses run on or near your site, scheduled around when the project starts. We send a quote within one working day.

04

CITB-registered, paperwork handled

KeyOstas is CITB-registered and handles scheme registration and card processing end to end, so your team gets card-ready without the admin landing on you.

What clients say
They turned a quote around the same day and had our supervisors booked onto SSSTS the following week. The trainer had clearly run sites himself, so nothing was theoretical.

Frequently asked

Construction training questions

What is the difference between SMSTS and SSSTS, and who needs which?

SMSTS, the Site Management Safety Training Scheme, is the manager-level course for site managers, agents and project managers. SSSTS, the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme, is the supervisor-level course for foremen, gangers and team leaders. Most sites need both, at the right level for each role.

How long are SMSTS and SSSTS cards valid, and what happens if mine expires?

Both are valid for five years. You renew with the matching refresher before the card expires. If it lapses there is no refresher route, and the full course has to be taken again, so it pays to book the refresher in good time.

Can you deliver SMSTS or SSSTS in-company on our site?

Yes. Both can be delivered in-company at or near your site, scheduled around your project dates, as well as on public course dates. In-company delivery is usually the most cost-effective way to train a group.

Do your construction courses count towards a CSCS card?

CITB Site Safety Plus courses such as SMSTS and SSSTS support the relevant manager and supervisor CSCS cards. Tell us the cards your client requires and we will confirm exactly which courses your team needs.

How quickly can you mobilise training for a new project?

We send a quote within one working day, Monday to Friday. In-company courses are then scheduled around your mobilisation dates. For a tight deadline, tell us the date the project starts and we will work back from it.

Do you cover CDM 2015 duties for principal contractors and designers?

Yes. Our CDM 2015 Awareness course covers the duties the regulations place on every dutyholder, including principal contractors and designers, and how to evidence competence and briefing.
