Quick answer

What is MEWP training?

MEWP training prepares operators to work a mobile elevating work platform — a scissor lift or cherry picker / boom — safely at height. It is delivered in-company to the Work at Height Regulations and PUWER, with an ITSSAR-accredited or KeyOstas in-house certificate on successful assessment.

For scissor lifts and cherry picker / boom platforms
Delivered to the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and PUWER
ITSSAR-accredited (TOPS) or KeyOstas in-house certificate
ITSSAR categories 1A, 1B, 3A and 3B

Working at height from a MEWP is high-risk work: the Work at Height Regulations 2005 require operators to be competent, and PUWER requires adequate training. The course covers the platform type your operators use — scissor (3A) or boom (3B), static or mobile — including pre-use checks, ground assessment, safe operation and emergency lowering and rescue. KeyOstas delivers it in-company on your own machine.

Is it right for you

Is this the right MEWP course?

KeyOstas trains MEWP operators at every level, on scissor lifts and boom platforms.

Right for you if…

You have operators who need to work at height from a scissor lift or cherry picker
You need novice, experienced-operator or refresher MEWP training
Your site or clients require ITSSAR-accredited, TOPS-registered training
You want operators trained in-company on your own platform
You need operators competent under the Work at Height Regulations

A different course fits better if…

You need fixed-machinery lift-truck training — see forklift training
You need overhead crane operation — see overhead crane training
You only need general working-at-height awareness, not platform operation

FAQ

MEWP Training — frequently asked questions

What does MEWP stand for?
MEWP stands for Mobile Elevating Work Platform — the family of machines that includes scissor lifts and cherry picker / boom platforms.
Is MEWP training a legal requirement?
The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require anyone working at height to be competent, and PUWER requires adequate training for work equipment. MEWP training is how employers meet that duty.
Does the course cover scissor lifts and cherry pickers?
Yes. The course covers ITSSAR categories 1A, 1B, 3A and 3B — static and mobile vertical platforms (scissor lifts) and boom platforms (cherry pickers). Tell us which your operators use.
Is this the same as IPAF training?
IPAF is the body most associated with MEWPs and issues the PAL card. KeyOstas delivers MEWP operator training to the same Work at Height and PUWER standard, certified through ITSSAR or in-house — talk to us about which your sites require.
How long is the course?
Typically one day for a scissor lift and up to one and a half days for a boom platform; an experienced-operator or refresher course is around one day. Duration flexes with candidate numbers.
How often is refresher training needed?
HSE and ITSSAR recommend refresher training every three to five years, and sooner after an incident or a change of platform or duties.
Can you train on our own MEWP at our site?
Yes. All KeyOstas MEWP training is delivered in-company, on your own platform, so operators train in their real working environment.
