Quick answer

What is vehicle banksman training?

Vehicle banksman training prepares staff to direct reversing and manoeuvring vehicles safely — the traffic marshal role. It covers recognised signals, safe positioning and managing the risks of workplace transport, and is delivered in-company with a KeyOstas certificate of attendance.

For vehicle banksmen and traffic marshals
Directing reversing and manoeuvring vehicles safely
Recognised signals, positioning and safe systems of work
A short, practical in-company course

Workplace transport — especially reversing vehicles — is one of the biggest causes of serious workplace injury. A trained vehicle banksman directs vehicles safely and keeps pedestrians clear. The course follows HSE workplace-transport guidance and covers signals, safe positioning, blind spots and safe systems of work. It is a short, practical course delivered in-company. Note: this is the vehicle marshalling role — for crane-lift banksman duties see slinger signaller training.

Is it right for you

Is vehicle banksman training right for you?

This is the vehicle marshalling role. If you need crane-lift signalling, a different course applies.

Right for you if…

You have staff who direct reversing or manoeuvring vehicles
Your site has significant workplace transport and pedestrian movement
You want to reduce the risk of reversing and manoeuvring incidents
You need a short, practical course that trains a whole team quickly
You want training delivered in-company, on your own site

A different course fits better if…

You need crane-lift signalling and slinging — see slinger signaller training
You need to operate the vehicles — see KeyOstas forklift and plant operator courses
You need full workplace-transport management, not marshalling — talk to our team

FAQ

Vehicle Banksman Training — frequently asked questions

What does a vehicle banksman do?
A vehicle banksman — or traffic marshal — directs reversing and manoeuvring vehicles using recognised signals, keeping the manoeuvre safe and pedestrians clear.
Is this the same as a slinger banksman?
No. A vehicle banksman marshals vehicles; a slinger / signaller (lifting banksman) attaches loads and directs crane lifts. They are different roles — see our separate slinger signaller course.
Is vehicle banksman training a legal requirement?
Workplace transport must be managed under health and safety law, and HSE guidance recommends trained banksmen where vehicles reverse or manoeuvre. The course is how employers meet that expectation.
How long is the course?
It is a short, practical course — typically half a day to a day, depending on numbers and your site. We will confirm when you book.
What certificate do delegates receive?
Each delegate receives a KeyOstas certificate of attendance, useful for compliance and induction records.
Can you train our whole team on site?
Yes. Vehicle banksman training is delivered in-company, on your own site, so the team trains in their real working environment.
How often should banksmen be retrained?
Refresher training is good practice every few years, and sooner after an incident or a change of site layout or traffic.
