Quick answer

What is CCNSG Leading a Team Safely (LATS)?

CCNSG Leading a Team Safely (LATS) is a one-day workshop run by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) that gives supervisors and team leaders an essential introduction to managing small teams safely. To attend, you must hold a current CCNSG Safety Passport. The course focuses on leadership essentials — planning, implementing and reviewing — with a natural emphasis on health and safety, and is assessed by the instructor. Successful delegates receive an ECITB certificate valid for three years.

LATS stands for Leading a Team Safely
Builds on the CCNSG Safety Passport — it does not replace it
For supervisory staff with responsibility for a team
Covers leadership, planning, communication and safe outcomes

LATS is aimed at supervisory staff who have responsibility for teams, but who may have had little or no formal training in health and safety responsibilities or in the essentials of leadership. It is a natural next step once a worker has gained their CCNSG Safety Passport and moved into a charge-hand, foreman or first-line supervisor role. KeyOstas delivers LATS as an ECITB Approved Training Provider, in classrooms across the UK and in-company at your premises.

Is it right for you

Is the CCNSG LATS course right for you?

LATS sits one step above the CCNSG Safety Passport. It is for people who lead a team — and it requires a current CCNSG card to attend.

Right for you if…

You supervise or lead a small team on engineering construction sites
You hold a current, in-date CCNSG Safety Passport — this is required to attend
You have moved into a supervisory role with little formal leadership or H&S training
You are a charge-hand, foreman, team leader or first-line supervisor
Your employer wants supervisors on a consistent safety-leadership standard

A different course fits better if…

You do not yet hold a CCNSG card — take the CCNSG National Safety Passport (2 days) first
Your CCNSG card is close to expiry — renew it via CCNSG Renewal so it stays valid for the course
You are a director or board member needing strategic H&S accountability — IOSH Safety for Executives and Directors fits better
You want a broader management H&S qualification — consider IOSH Managing Safely
After the course

What you will be able to do

By the end of the day you will have the practical tools to lead a team safely on site — and an ECITB certificate that proves it.

Lead your team safely

Influence team behaviour

Plan and communicate safely

Put the right planning in place and communicate health and safety clearly for every site task your team takes on.

Lower risk on the job

Help your team operate on site more safely, lowering the risk to themselves and to those working around them.

Apply leadership essentials

Use the plan–do–review cycle

Apply the leadership essentials of planning, implementing and reviewing work, with safety built into each stage.

Communicate and self-manage

Use clear communication techniques and self-management skills to lead a team effectively under site pressure.

Achieve safe outcomes

Follow practical guidelines for achieving safe outcomes, and find safe solutions to common workplace problems.

Course content

The four elements of the LATS course

The ECITB LATS course is built around the essentials of leadership — planning, implementing and reviewing — and is broken down into four elements.

1

The Team

  • What makes a successful team
  • The ingredients of effective teamwork on site
  • Your role in shaping how the team works together
2

The Plan

  • What you need to put in place to plan a successful, safe job
  • Anticipating hazards before work starts
  • Setting the team up to work safely from the outset
3

The Job

  • Supervision, monitoring and communication during the work
  • Keeping the team on track and on task
  • Responding when conditions or risks change
4

The Good Job

  • Objectives, capabilities, resources and support
  • Reviewing the job and learning from it
  • Achieving a safe outcome the team can be proud of
Assessment

How is the LATS course assessed?

LATS is a practical leadership workshop, and the assessment reflects that — there is no multiple-choice exam to revise for.

ASSESS

Instructor-led written assessment

A written assessment is conducted and assessed by the instructor on the day, to confirm you have achieved the competencies the course sets out — influencing behaviour, planning, communication and achieving safe outcomes.

LEARN

Workshop-based learning

The day is delivered as an interactive workshop — trainer-led sessions, group discussion and shared site experience — so the assessment reflects the leadership skills you have just worked through together.

On successful completion you are issued an ECITB Leading a Team Safely certificate, valid for three years. LATS does not replace your CCNSG Safety Passport — you keep both, and should renew your CCNSG card separately before it expires.
