The safety challenge

The safety challenge in manufacturing

A manufacturing HSE manager runs rolling competence programmes and has to pass customer and regulator audits. These are the hazards the page below is built around.

Machinery and work equipment

Guarding, inspection and the competent use of machinery and lifting equipment set the baseline for a safe plant. An audit expects both the equipment and the people to be competent.PUWER and LOLER

Hazardous substances

Chemicals, dusts and fumes on a manufacturing site need assessment, control and competent assessors, not just general awareness.Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)

Isolation and lockout/tagout

Uncontrolled energy during maintenance is a recurring cause of serious injury. Safe isolation needs a clear procedure and competent people behind it.Safe systems of work and LOTO

Occupational-health exposures

Noise, hand-arm vibration and manual handling are long-term exposures that demand awareness across the workforce and competent assessors.Noise, Vibration and Manual Handling Regulations

A rolling IOSH Managing Safely programme for a large manufacturer

Problem
A manufacturer needed all 63 of its line managers brought to a consistent safety-competence standard, without taking the production line down to do it.
Solution
KeyOstas proposed dates within 24 hours, then ran in-company IOSH Managing Safely cohorts scheduled around the shift pattern, alongside COSHH Assessor training for the technical team.
Outcome
A fully certified supervisory layer of 63 managers inside one calendar year, a clear COSHH-assessment capability, and an auditable training record ready for customer and regulator scrutiny.

They scheduled the cohorts around our shifts so we never lost production time, and the trainers clearly understood a factory floor.

Frequently asked

Manufacturing training questions

Which IOSH course is right for our line managers versus our shop-floor staff?

IOSH Managing Safely is the course for line managers and supervisors who are responsible for the safety of others. IOSH Working Safely is the one-day course for shop-floor staff at any level. Many manufacturers run both, at the right level for each group.

Can you deliver training in-company, around our shift patterns?

Yes. In-company delivery is scheduled around your shift patterns to keep the line running. Tell us your shifts and we will plan cohorts that fit around them.

Do you provide COSHH assessor training, not just awareness?

Yes. COSHH Awareness gives the workforce a working understanding of hazardous substances. COSHH Assessor trains competent people to carry out and record the assessments your site needs.

What is the difference between PUWER and LOLER, and do you cover both?

PUWER covers the provision and safe use of work equipment generally. LOLER adds specific duties for lifting equipment and lifting operations. Our PUWER and LOLER course covers both.

Do you offer process safety management training for high-hazard (COMAH) sites?

Yes. The NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management is built for high-hazard and COMAH-level manufacturing, and we deliver it in-company.

How do you keep our training records audit-ready?

Every course produces a clear certificated record. As an ISO 45001, 14001 and 9001 certified provider our own processes are audited too, so the training evidence you hand to a customer or regulator stands up.
