Quick answer

What is the CCNSG Safety Passport?

The CCNSG Safety Passport is the nationally recognised health and safety card for the UK engineering construction industry. Run by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB), the two-day course gives everyone working on engineering construction sites a shared baseline of health, safety and environmental awareness. It is assessed by an 80-question knowledge test, and successful delegates receive a CCNSG card valid for three years.

CCNSG stands for Client Contractor National Safety Group
2-day tutor-led course — no prior qualifications needed
Often mandatory for site access on engineering construction projects
Industry-trusted since 1993 — over one million cards issued

The scheme is built around hazard recognition, risk assessment and the role personal behaviour plays in preventing accidents — the “awareness” foundation every worker needs before going on site. Holding a valid CCNSG card is frequently a mandatory pre-requisite for gaining access to engineering construction sites such as power stations, refineries and petrochemical plants. KeyOstas delivers the course as an ECITB Approved Training Provider, in classrooms across the UK and in-company at your premises.

Is it right for you

Is the CCNSG National Safety Passport right for you?

The CCNSG National Safety Passport is the starting point on the CCNSG pathway. If you already hold a card, or you supervise a team, a different CCNSG course may suit you better.

Right for you if…

You need access to engineering construction sites — power, energy, oil, gas or petrochemical — and your client or principal contractor asks for a CCNSG card
You are a contractor, sub-contractor or site operative new to the engineering construction industry
You are a trade professional — welder, fitter, scaffolder, fabricator — working across multiple ECI sites
You do not yet hold a CCNSG card, or have never held one
Your employer wants the whole crew on a single recognised site-safety baseline

A different course fits better if…

You already hold an in-date CCNSG card and just need to extend it — take the CCNSG Renewal (1 day)
You hold a current CCNSG card and now supervise a team — take CCNSG Leading a Team Safely (LATS)
You work in general (non-engineering) construction — your site may ask for the CITB HS&E test or an SPA passport instead
You want a career health & safety qualification — the NEBOSH General Certificate (Level 3) is the route
After the course

What you will be able to do

By the end of the two days you will have the awareness and confidence to work safely on an engineering construction site — and a CCNSG card that proves it.

Work safely on site

Recognise site hazards

Identify the common hazards on engineering construction sites — working at height, confined spaces, lifting operations, hazardous substances, site traffic and stored energy.

Follow safe systems of work

Understand and work to risk assessments, method statements and permit-to-work systems, and know why each one matters before a task starts.

Use PPE and site rules correctly

Select and use Personal Protective Equipment properly, and follow the site rules and signage that keep you and those around you safe.

Understand your responsibilities

Know your legal duties

Understand your responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act and how the law applies to you as an individual on site.

Report incidents correctly

Know how to report accidents, near-misses and dangerous occurrences, and understand the reporting lines on a typical site.

See how behaviour affects safety

Recognise how your own attitude and behaviour influence the safety and wellbeing of the whole team around you.

Course content

What does the 2-day CCNSG course cover?

The CCNSG National Safety Passport syllabus is set by the ECITB and is identical across every Approved Training Provider. It is delivered through tutor-led training, group discussion and shared site experience, and is organised into four core areas.

1

Health & safety legislation and safe systems of work

  • Health and safety law and the duties of clients, employers and employees
  • Approved Codes of Practice and the role of the HSE
  • Where to find reliable health and safety information
  • Risk assessments, method statements and permit-to-work systems
  • The consequences of not meeting legal duties
2

Safe use of tools and equipment in different environments

  • Hazards and risks, fire safety and manual handling
  • Slips, trips and falls, and working at height
  • Noise, vibration, confined spaces and excavations
  • Hazardous substances, asbestos, radiation and lifting operations
  • Site traffic, electricity and stored-energy devices
3

Safe working practices and emergencies

  • Selection and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Incident and accident reporting procedures
  • Reporting lines and emergency response
  • Why ongoing safety training matters
4

Personal site safety responsibilities

  • Safety-first attitudes and personal behaviour
  • How individual actions affect the whole team
  • Introduction to mental health and equality awareness
  • Minimising the risks from different site hazards
Assessment

How is the CCNSG course assessed?

There is nothing to revise in advance. The knowledge test is built into the two-day programme — you learn the material and are assessed on it across the course.

TEST

80-question knowledge test

The course is assessed by 80 multiple-choice questions covering the full ECITB syllabus. These are delivered either as four 20-question tests across the two days, or as two 40-question tests at the end of each day — your tutor will explain the format on the day.

LEARN

Tutor-led and discussion-based

Learning is delivered through trainer-led sessions, group discussion and shared site experience — not self-study. The two days are interactive, with real-world engineering construction examples, so the test reflects what you have just worked through together.

Pass the knowledge test and you are issued the ECITB CCNSG Safety Passport card, valid for three years. Before it expires, extend it through the one-day CCNSG Renewal course — there is no grace period, so renew before the expiry date or the full two-day course must be re-sat. You can renew up to six months early.
Common question

CCNSG Safety Passport vs the CITB HS&E test

Buyers often ask which site-safety card they need. The two cover different parts of the industry — here is how they compare.

CCNSG Safety Passport
