Choosing a course

Choosing the right SPA course

The right SPA course depends on the site type, the delegate's role, and whether they already hold a current passport.

01

Which SPA passport do I need?

It follows the site. Petrol filling stations need the Petrol Passport. Food and drink manufacturing sites need the Food & Drink Passport. Quarries need the SPA/MPQC Quarry Passport. Construction sites that ask for SPA take the Construction passport. Supervisors top up with the Supervisor passport.

02

Why a Core Day plus a sector day?

SPA passports are built in two parts. The Core Day covers the safety knowledge every contractor needs across sectors. The sector day layers on the rules and hazards specific to that industry. Together they make a full SPA passport, valid 3 years.

03

How do renewals work?

Every SPA passport runs for 3 years. To stay valid you must sit the 1-day renewal within 6 months of expiry. Miss the window and you sit the full 2-day course again.

Common questions

SPA courses: FAQs

What is the Safety Pass Alliance (SPA)?

The Safety Pass Alliance is a UK passport scheme owned by industry. It sets the safety knowledge that contractors must have before working on member sites. KeyOstas is an SPA-approved training provider and delivers every SPA passport in the scheme.

Do I need the Core Day before the sector day?

Yes. Every SPA passport has the same Core Day followed by a sector day. We run them back-to-back as a single 2-day course, or you can sit the Core Day on its own first and add a sector day later.

How long is an SPA passport valid?

All SPA sector passports run for 3 years from the date of issue. The SPA Construction passport is valid for 5 years on the CSCS cycle. Renewal must be sat within 6 months of expiry.

Can I take the SPA passport virtually?

Most SPA passports can be delivered virtually (public dates or in-company). The exception is the SPA Construction passport, which the CSCS rules require to be classroom-based only.

Where do you run SPA passport courses?

Public dates run from our Southam training centre in Warwickshire and we also deliver in-company at sites across the UK. Virtual classroom dates are open to delegates anywhere.

Can KeyOstas deliver SPA training to a whole team?

Yes. In-company delivery is our most common request. We can put a full SPA team through the Core Day and any sector passport on a single visit to your site, with no travel time for your staff.
