Quick answer

What is loading shovel training?

Loading shovel training prepares operators to work a wheeled loading shovel safely and productively — loading, stockpiling and moving bulk materials. It is delivered in-company under PUWER, with an ITSSAR-accredited or KeyOstas in-house certificate on successful assessment.

For wheeled loading shovels
Delivered under PUWER, and LOLER for any lifting duties
ITSSAR-accredited (TOPS) or KeyOstas in-house certificate
Novice, experienced and refresher levels

The wheeled loading shovel is a powerful earthmoving and materials-handling machine. Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER), employers must ensure operators are competent and adequately trained — and LOLER applies if the machine is used to lift. The course covers the machine, ground and site assessment, loading and stockpiling technique, and safe operation. KeyOstas delivers it in-company on your own loading shovel.

FAQ

Loading Shovel Training — frequently asked questions

Is loading shovel training a legal requirement?
Under PUWER, employers must ensure operators of work equipment are competent and adequately trained. Loading shovel training is how employers meet that duty.
Is the loading shovel covered by the L117 forklift code?
No. HSE’s L117 Approved Code of Practice applies to rider-operated lift trucks. A wheeled loading shovel is earthmoving and materials-handling plant, trained and assessed under PUWER — the course reflects the correct standard.
Do I need an ITSSAR-accredited certificate, or is in-house enough?
Both are valid. An ITSSAR-accredited certificate is independently verifiable and TOPS-registered; a KeyOstas in-house certificate is delivered to the same training standard. Choose based on what your sites and clients ask for.
How long is the course?
Typically three to five days for a novice operator, two to three days for an experienced operator, and one day for a refresher. Duration flexes with candidate numbers.
How often is refresher training needed?
HSE and ITSSAR recommend refresher training every three to five years, and sooner after an incident or a change of machine or duties.
Can you train on our own loading shovel?
Yes. All KeyOstas loading shovel training is delivered in-company, on your own machine, in your real working environment.
Is KeyOstas an approved training provider?
Yes. KeyOstas is an ITSSAR-accredited training provider and has delivered operator training since 1984.
