The safety challenge

The safety challenge in logistics & warehousing

A depot or warehouse manager runs sites where powered vehicles and people share space and peak periods drive intense throughput. These are the hazards the page below is built around.

Vehicles and pedestrians sharing space

Workplace-transport incidents are a leading cause of serious warehouse injury, wherever powered vehicles and people share the same floor.HSE workplace transport guidance

Working at height

MEWPs, order-pickers and mezzanine work all demand competent operation and the right category of training.Work at Height Regulations 2005

Racking and storage

Overloaded or damaged racking is a collapse risk. Competent, regular inspection is essential to catch damage early.PUWER and SEMA racking guidance

Vehicle movements and loading

Banksman competence controls the yard and the loading bay, where reversing and loading create serious risk.Safe systems of work for vehicle movements

Case study

A plant-operator certification programme for a distribution network

Problem
A logistics operator needed operators across nine depots certified to use MEWPs and plant safely, and racking inspected competently, before a peak-season audit.
Solution
KeyOstas proposed dates within 24 hours, then delivered in-company ITSSAR operator training and racking-inspection training depot by depot, scheduled around throughput so each site kept moving.
Outcome
A certified operator workforce of more than 140 across the network, racking signed off at every site, and the peak-season audit passed.

They came to each depot and worked around our peaks, so we never lost capacity. Dates were proposed within a day and the accreditation status of every course was spelled out.

Frequently asked

Logistics, Warehousing & Retail training questions

What is the difference between accredited (ITSSAR) training and a certificate of training?

ITSSAR-accredited training is governed by an external accrediting body, with set standards and registration. A KeyOstas certificate of training confirms a course was completed to our standard where no accreditation scheme applies. We tell you plainly which is which for every course.

Can you deliver MEWP and plant operator training in-company at our depot?

Yes. MEWP and plant operator training is delivered in-company at your depot, on your own machines and around your throughput.

Which MEWP categories (1A, 1B, 3A, 3B) does my team need?

The category follows the machine: 1A and 1B cover vertical platforms such as scissor lifts, 3A and 3B cover boom-type platforms such as cherry pickers. Tell us the machines on site and we will confirm the categories your operators need.

Do you provide racking inspection training?

Yes. Our Racking Inspection course trains a competent person to inspect racking and storage systems and to recognise and act on damage.

Can you coordinate training across our network of depots?

Yes. KeyOstas runs depot-by-depot programmes across a distribution network, scheduled around each site throughput, with one point of contact for the whole programme.

How often should plant operators be refreshed or re-assessed?

Operator competence should be refreshed periodically and after any significant change of equipment or role. Tell us your fleet and operating pattern and we will recommend a refresher cycle.
