Quick answer
IOSH Managing Safely Refresher is a one-day refresher course for line managers and supervisors whose 3-year IOSH Managing Safely certificate is approaching its renewal. Awarded by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, it revisits the Plan-Do-Check-Act framework across six condensed modules and is assessed by a 30-minute, 21-question multiple-choice exam. Your digital IOSH certificate is available immediately via the IOSH portal once marks are verified.
Is it the right fit?
The IOSH Managing Safely Refresher is the right qualification when your 3-year IOSH MS certificate is approaching renewal, or your role/sector has changed and you want to reset. Here’s the line.
What you’ll be able to do
By the end of the day you have a reset on the Plan-Do-Check-Act framework, an up-to-date view of UK H&S legislation and case law, and your IOSH digital certificate valid for the next 3 years.
Reset & remember
Revisit the moral, legal and financial case for managing safely. Refresh your mental model of why your day-to-day decisions matter to your organisation and your team.
Walk through hazard, risk, likelihood and consequence again. Reset on the 5-step risk assessment process and apply it to a worked example.
Cover what’s changed in UK H&S legislation, case law and guidance since your last cert. Updates on Sentencing Guidelines, mental health duties and enforcement trends.
Lead from refreshed knowledge
Refresh on what positive safety culture actually looks like. Identify the leadership behaviours you’ve slipped on since the last cert, and recommit to specific actions.
Reset on structured incident investigation — immediate vs underlying causes, recurrence-prevention actions, not blame-allocation.
Pass the 30-minute, 21-question multiple-choice exam. Digital IOSH certificate issued via the IOSH portal immediately after marks are verified. Valid for the next 3 years.
Syllabus
The refresher syllabus has 6 modules following IOSH’s Plan-Do-Check-Act framework. The structure is set by IOSH and identical across every approved provider — what differs is the trainer, the worked examples and the exam-day prep.
Reflecting on what you learned in the original Managing Safely course and why it still matters. Re-grounding in the moral, legal and financial case for managing safely.
Why leadership matters in safety. How to create and reinforce a positive safety culture from a line-management position. The behaviours that distinguish managers who lead safety from managers who outsource it.
Safety and health policy and implementation. How to translate policy into actionable steps your team will actually follow.
Risk assessment exercise — a worked example you take through end-to-end. Refreshes the 5-step process and the hierarchy of controls.
Types of safety data and measurement. KPIs, lagging vs leading indicators, what to track and what to ignore.
Reviewing performance and acting on lessons learned. Continuous improvement at line-management level.

How most organisations mix it: Refresher for line managers every 3 years, Leading Safely for the board.
Refresh cycle
The IOSH Managing Safely Refresher is booked on a 3-year cadence by line managers and supervisors whose original IOSH MS certificate is approaching its refresh window. The cert resets your 3-year clock and demonstrates current managerial competence to clients, insurers, ISO 45001 auditors, and procurement teams.
Refresh-cycle triggers above reflect what our clients actually book against. The 3-year cadence is IOSH-recommended — not formally mandated — but it’s what ISO 45001 auditors, insurance reviewers and major-client procurement teams typically expect to see.
Assessment
One combined assessment at the end of the 1-day course. Marked by IOSH-approved markers. Most delegates finish well inside the 30-minute slot.
A 30-minute closed-book paper of 21 multiple-choice questions, covering all 6 refresher modules (Thinking Back, Leadership, Plan, Do, Check, Act). The MCQ format is well-scaffolded by the day’s training — managers come prepared and pass first time.
Marks are verified by IOSH after the exam, then your digital certificate is available immediately on the IOSH portal — no 4-6 week wait like physical certificates. Valid for the next 3 years.
Digital certificate is available immediately on the IOSH portal once marks are verified — no 4-6 week wait. KeyOstas handles registration with IOSH on every delegate’s behalf. Resits, if needed, are coordinated by KeyOstas at no extra tuition cost — in practice resits are rare on the refresher.
Training and support
Every KeyOstas IOSH trainer holds current IOSH membership, has direct UK industry experience (most are former safety leads in construction, manufacturing, FM or logistics), and is independently audited as part of our IOSH-approved provider status.
The IOSH paper is straightforward when delegates have engaged with the material — but exam technique still matters at this level. We walk delegates through worked examples of every question format before the assessment — refresher learners come prepared.
Two delivery formats, both closed to your team, same syllabus and same IOSH certificate. On-site: our trainer comes to your premises with everything needed. Virtual: a live virtual classroom over Microsoft Teams or your preferred platform.
The IOSH Managing Safely Refresher digital certificate has no formal expiry date. IOSH recommends a refresh every 3 years — KeyOstas can run repeat cohorts on the same site for new starters or refresher groups.
KeyOstas IOSH Managing Safely Refresher cohorts are led by IOSH-approved tutors with 10+ years of UK industry experience in construction, manufacturing, FM, healthcare, logistics or public-sector contexts. Each is independently audited as part of our IOSH-approved provider status. On-site name and bio confirmed when you book.

Why KeyOstas
There are 2,000+ IOSH-approved providers worldwide. Five reasons KeyOstas is one of the longest-standing in the UK.
01
KeyOstas holds full IOSH-approved provider status. Our trainers, materials and assessment processes are independently audited by IOSH each year. Not every provider holds that status — some run unaccredited “IOSH-style” courses without the official certificate.
02
We offer both formats so you can pick the right one for individual managers vs whole-team refresh. Public cohort for solo bookings at £208 + VAT; in-company for teams of 6+ at POA. The course is jargon-light, scenario-heavy, and runs in one day with everyone certified at the end of it.
03
A 100% first-time pass rate across our IOSH courses. We walk through worked exam examples before the 21-question MCQ — managers come prepared and pass first time.
04
One named contact for booking, joining instructions, site access, reasonable adjustments and IOSH registration. We come to you — either on-site or as a closed virtual classroom — no co-ordinating a coach to a training centre, no Microsoft Teams accounts for the warehouse team.
05
Tutor on the end of the phone after the course. Repeat cohorts on the same site for new starters. Pathway signposting if a delegate wants to step up to IOSH Leading Safely (board-level), or the NEBOSH National General Certificate (Level 3 career-track).

FAQs
The questions managers and PAs ask most often about prerequisites, assessment, pricing, public vs in-company, and the 3-year refresh cycle.
IOSH Managing Safely Refresher is a one-day refresher course for line managers and supervisors whose 3-year IOSH Managing Safely certificate is approaching its renewal. Awarded by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), it revisits the Plan-Do-Check-Act framework across six condensed modules and is assessed by a 30-minute, 21-question multiple-choice exam. Your digital IOSH certificate is available immediately via the IOSH portal once marks are verified.
Line managers and supervisors who have previously completed the full 3-day IOSH Managing Safely course and need to refresh their certificate. IOSH recommends a refresh every 3 years. The refresher is also valuable if you have moved sectors or roles since your last cert, or if a regulator review, ISO 45001 audit or major-client procurement asked for up-to-date IOSH-certified competence.
One day — around 5.5 hours of trainer-led content plus a 30-minute multiple-choice exam at the end. KeyOstas delivers it as a public virtual classroom (mixed cohort) or in-company at your premises (on-site or as a closed virtual classroom for your team).
A single 30-minute multiple-choice exam with 21 questions, covering all six refresher modules (Thinking Back, Leadership, Plan, Do, Check, Act). Marks are verified by IOSH and the digital certificate is available immediately via the IOSH portal once verification completes.
Yes. IOSH Managing Safely Refresher is designed for delegates who have previously completed the full 3-day IOSH Managing Safely course. If you have never completed Managing Safely, you need the full course first. Talk to us if you are not sure whether your previous cert qualifies you for the refresher.
Public virtual classroom: £208 + VAT per delegate. In-company on-site or virtual: price on application, based on delegate numbers, your site postcode and any travel. All prices include IOSH registration, the assessment and the digital certificate.
IOSH-issued certificates do not formally expire, but IOSH recommends a refresh every 3 years to stay current with regulatory changes and best practice. The Managing Safely Refresher resets your 3-year clock.
IOSH recommends refreshing every 3 years after completing the full Managing Safely. You can book the refresher earlier if a role/sector change, regulator review or client procurement requires it. Most clients book the refresher 2 years 10 months after their original Managing Safely course to keep the clock visibly current.
Public virtual classroom is the right fit for individual managers booking their own refresh or small teams of 1-3. In-company is the right fit for organisations refreshing 6+ managers together, especially when you want sector-specific case studies built around your operations. Both formats use the same IOSH-approved trainer pool, syllabus and assessment.
Some providers offer e-learning refresher options. KeyOstas runs only tutor-led delivery — public virtual classroom or in-company — because we believe the value of a refresher is in the discussion, scenario-walking and exam-prep that an interactive session provides. Self-paced e-learning can leave delegates passing the assessment without engaging deeply with the material.
If you have a current or recently-expired IOSH MS certificate (within the last 5 years), the 1-day refresher is right. If you have never completed Managing Safely, or your cert is more than 5 years old, you need the full 3-day Managing Safely course. Talk to us if you are not sure which applies.
IOSH certificates do not formally expire, so you can still book the refresher even if more than 3 years have passed. However, if it has been more than 5 years since your original Managing Safely, we recommend the full 3-day Managing Safely instead — the refresher assumes recent familiarity with the Plan-Do-Check-Act framework.
IOSH allows resits. The multiple-choice paper is well-scaffolded by the day training, so resits are rare. KeyOstas coordinates resits with the delegate at no extra tuition cost. Our pass rate on KeyOstas IOSH courses sits at 100%.
