Quick answer

What is PUWER and LOLER training?

PUWER and LOLER training covers the two regulations that govern equipment at work: PUWER, for all work equipment, and LOLER, for lifting equipment. The course explains the hazards, the employer and employee duties, and the controls each set of regulations requires. KeyOstas delivers it as a one-day in-company course.

Covers the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)
Covers the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)
Explains thorough examination, inspection and the duty-holder responsibilities
Certificate of attendance for every delegate
Almost every workplace uses work equipment, and a lot of workplaces lift loads. Two sets of regulations govern that: PUWER covers all work equipment, from a hand tool to a production line, while LOLER adds specific duties wherever equipment lifts loads or people. This course explains both. It covers how work equipment must be suitable, maintained and guarded, and then the LOLER duties: planning lifting operations, the strength and stability of lifting equipment, marking, and the thorough examination that lifting equipment must undergo.

FAQ

PUWER & LOLER training: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PUWER and LOLER?
PUWER, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, covers all work equipment. LOLER, the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, adds specific duties wherever equipment is used to lift loads or people.
How long is the course?
One day, delivered in-company at your premises.
Who should attend?
Managers, supervisors and engineers responsible for work equipment or lifting equipment, and anyone who organises or oversees lifting operations.
What is a thorough examination?
It is the formal examination of lifting equipment by a competent person at set intervals, required by LOLER, to confirm the equipment is still safe to use. The course covers what it involves and how often it is needed.
How often must lifting equipment be thoroughly examined?
Under LOLER, lifting equipment used for lifting people is thoroughly examined at least every six months, and other lifting equipment at least every twelve months, or in line with an examination scheme. The course explains this in detail.
Can the course include our own equipment?
Yes. A practical session looking at the work and lifting equipment on your own site can be built into the day.
Does this course train equipment operators?
No. It is about the PUWER and LOLER duties for managers and duty holders. Operator training for a specific machine is a separate, machine-specific course.
Is this an accredited qualification?
It is a KeyOstas course with a certificate of attendance: practical training rather than a regulated qualification.
