Quick answer

What is abrasive wheels training?

Abrasive wheels training teaches the people who mount and use abrasive wheels and grinding machines to do so safely: understanding the hazards, selecting the right wheel, mounting it correctly and setting the guards and work rests. KeyOstas delivers it in half a day at your premises, with practical exercises.

For the people who mount, change and use abrasive wheels
Covers the law, wheel selection, safe mounting, guards and rests
Includes practical, hands-on exercises
Certificate of attendance for every delegate
An abrasive wheel that is wrongly selected, damaged or badly mounted can burst at high speed, and the results are severe. Because of that, only people who are trained and competent should mount abrasive wheels. The duty comes from the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), with the detail set out in the HSE guidance HSG17, Safety in the use of abrasive wheels. This course gives mounters, operators and supervisors that training.

Is it right for you

Is abrasive wheels training right for your team?

It is for everyone who mounts, changes or works with abrasive wheels, and those who supervise them.

Right for you if…

Your staff mount or change abrasive wheels on grinding machines
Your team uses bench, pedestal or portable grinders
You have supervisors or managers responsible for this work
You need to show operators are trained and competent under PUWER
You are inducting new starters or refreshing existing staff

A different course fits better if…

Your team only uses equipment with no abrasive wheels
You need broad work-equipment training across all machinery: a wider PUWER course may suit
You want a regulated, accredited qualification: this is a certificate of attendance

FAQ

Abrasive wheels training: frequently asked questions

Who can mount an abrasive wheel?
Only a person who is trained and competent should mount an abrasive wheel. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 require operators to have adequate training, and the HSE guidance HSG17 sets out what that involves.
Is abrasive wheels training a legal requirement?
Employers must provide adequate training for people who use work equipment under PUWER 1998, and abrasive wheels are high-risk equipment. This course is how employers meet that duty for wheel mounting and use.
How long is the course?
Half a day, delivered in-company at your premises, including the practical exercises.
Who should attend?
The people who mount or change abrasive wheels, machine operators who use them, and the supervisors and managers responsible for that work.
Does the course include practical exercises?
Yes. Delegates carry out hands-on exercises in selecting, mounting and setting up wheels under supervision, on your own equipment where suitable.
Are the old Abrasive Wheels Regulations still in force?
No. The Abrasive Wheels Regulations 1970 were revoked and the duties are now covered by PUWER 1998, supported by the HSE guidance HSG17. The course is built around the current law.
How often should the training be refreshed?
There is no fixed legal interval, but refresher training at sensible intervals, and whenever equipment or practice changes, keeps competence current.
Is this an accredited qualification?
It is a KeyOstas course with a certificate of attendance: practical training rather than a regulated qualification.
