Quick answer

What is ladders and steps safety training?

Ladders and steps safety training teaches workers to decide when a ladder is the right access equipment, set it up correctly and use it safely. KeyOstas delivers it in-company as a half-day course covering the law, the common causes of ladder accidents and practical safe use.

Covers the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974
Works through real ladder accident case studies and why they happen
Practical erecting, footing and use of ladders and step ladders
Certificate of attendance for every delegate
Falls from ladders remain one of the most common causes of workplace injury, and most are avoidable. A ladder is work at height, so its use is governed by the Work at Height Regulations 2005, which expect employers to make sure the right equipment is chosen and used by people who know how. This half-day course gives your staff that grounding. It looks at why ladder accidents happen, works through a checklist for safe use, and explains the legal duties under the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. Delegates learn to make a personal risk assessment before they climb, judging whether a ladder is suitable for the task at all, and they practise erecting and using ladders and step ladders correctly. The session can be run around your own equipment and tasks.

FAQ

Ladders and steps safety training: frequently asked questions

Is using a ladder classed as work at height?
Yes. Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, working from a ladder or step ladder is work at height, so the employer has legal duties to plan the work, choose suitable equipment and make sure it is used by competent people.
How long is the course?
It is a half-day in-company course, so a team can be trained with minimal disruption to the working day.
Who should attend?
Anyone who uses ladders or step ladders as part of their work, and supervisors who oversee tasks involving them.
Does the course include practical work?
Yes. Delegates practise erecting and using ladders and step ladders correctly and safely, alongside the classroom content.
Can you use our own ladders?
Yes. Delivered in-company, the course can be run around your own equipment and the tasks your staff really carry out.
Does this course cover ladder inspection?
It covers the pre-use checks every user should make. To train people to carry out formal inspections of ladders and access equipment, see the Inspection of Ladders and Working at Height Equipment course.
Is a ladder always the right equipment?
Not always. The course teaches delegates to risk assess the task first and decide whether a ladder is suitable, or whether a tower, MEWP or other access equipment is needed.
Is this an accredited qualification?
It is a KeyOstas course with a certificate of attendance: practical training rather than a regulated qualification.
