Quick answer

What is slinger signaller training?

Slinger signaller training prepares people to attach (sling) loads to a crane and direct the lift safely using recognised signals — the lifting banksman role. It is delivered in-company under LOLER and BS 7121, with an ITSSAR-accredited or KeyOstas in-house certificate on successful assessment.

For the slinger / signaller (lifting banksman) role
Slinging loads and directing crane lifts with recognised signals
Delivered to LOLER, PUWER and BS 7121
ITSSAR-accredited (TOPS) or KeyOstas in-house certificate

Safe lifting depends on the whole team, not just the crane operator. The slinger signaller attaches loads correctly and directs the lift — a safety-critical role. LOLER governs lifting operations and BS 7121 is the code of practice. The course covers lifting accessories, slinging technique, load weight, communication and signals. KeyOstas delivers it in-company. Note: this is the lifting banksman — for traffic marshalling see vehicle banksman training.

FAQ

Slinger Signaller Training — frequently asked questions

What is a slinger signaller?
A slinger signaller attaches (slings) loads to a crane and directs the lift using recognised signals. It is sometimes called a lifting banksman — a safety-critical role in any crane lift.
Is this the same as a vehicle banksman?
No. A slinger signaller works with crane lifts; a vehicle banksman marshals reversing and manoeuvring vehicles. They are different roles — see our separate vehicle banksman course.
Is slinger signaller training a legal requirement?
LOLER requires lifting operations to be properly planned and carried out by competent people. Slinger signaller training is how employers ensure that role is competent.
Do I need an ITSSAR-accredited certificate, or is in-house enough?
Both are valid. An ITSSAR-accredited certificate is independently verifiable and TOPS-registered; a KeyOstas in-house certificate is delivered to the same standard. Choose based on what your sites and clients ask for.
How long is the course?
Typically two days for a novice, and around one day for experienced delegates or a refresher. Duration flexes with the number of delegates.
How often is refresher training needed?
Refresher training is recommended every three to five years, and sooner after an incident or a change of duties.
Can you train our team on site?
Yes. All KeyOstas slinger signaller training is delivered in-company, in your real working environment.
