Quick answer

What is fire risk assessment training?

Fire risk assessment training teaches delegates how to carry out and record a fire risk assessment: identifying fire hazards, the people at risk and the precautions needed. KeyOstas delivers it over two days in-company, focused on low to medium-risk premises.

Built around the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
For low to medium-risk premises: offices, shops, light industrial
Includes a hands-on fire risk assessment exercise
Certificate of attendance for every delegate
Almost every workplace in England and Wales must have a current fire risk assessment. It is a duty placed on the ‘responsible person’ by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. This course prepares managers, facilities and health & safety staff to carry out that assessment for low to medium-risk premises, record the findings and act on them. For high-risk or sleeping-risk premises a specialist assessor should be appointed.

Is it right for you

Is this course right for you?

It suits the people who own fire safety for everyday commercial premises.

Right for you if…

You are responsible for fire safety in offices, shops or light-industrial premises
You need to carry out or review your own fire risk assessment
You are a manager, facilities or health & safety team member
You want to understand the law behind the assessment, not just a checklist
You would like to practise on a real assessment before doing your own

A different course fits better if…

Your premises are high-risk or have a sleeping risk such as hotels, care homes or HMOs, where a specialist assessor should be used
You only need basic staff fire training (see Fire Awareness training)
You need to appoint fire wardens (see Fire Warden & Marshal training)
After the course

What you will be able to do

By the end of the two days, every delegate will be able to do the following.

Understand the risk

Know the law

State what the Fire Safety Order and related legislation require of the responsible person.

Identify hazards

Find the flammable materials and ignition sources that create fire risk in a building.

Understand fire spread

Explain how fire and smoke spread, and how compartmentation and construction resist them.

Recognise who is at risk

Identify the people a fire would put at risk, and why.

Carry out the assessment

Assess escape routes

Judge means of escape, travel distances, emergency lighting and signage.

Review alarm & detection

Outline the BS 5839 requirements for fire alarm and detection systems.

Complete the assessment

Work through a fire risk assessment and record the findings and recommendations.

FAQ

Fire risk assessment training: frequently asked questions

Is a fire risk assessment a legal requirement?
Yes. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the ‘responsible person’ for almost every workplace in England and Wales must carry out and keep up to date a fire risk assessment.
What does ‘low to medium-risk premises’ mean?
Premises such as offices, shops and light-industrial units where there is no sleeping risk and no unusual fire hazard. High-risk premises, and those with a sleeping risk such as hotels, care homes and HMOs, need a specialist assessor.
Who should attend?
Managers, facilities staff and health & safety team members who are, or will be, responsible for carrying out or reviewing the fire risk assessment.
How long is the course?
Two days, delivered in-company at your premises.
Does the course cover DSEAR?
Yes. Day one includes the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 as part of the legislation review.
Will I be able to assess my own premises afterwards?
Yes, for low to medium-risk premises. The course covers the law, the hazards and a full hands-on assessment exercise so you can carry out and record your own assessment.
Is this an accredited qualification?
It is a KeyOstas course with a certificate of attendance. It is in-depth, practical training rather than a regulated qualification.
Can KeyOstas assess our premises for us?
Yes. KeyOstas also offers a fire risk assessment consultancy service if you would prefer the assessment carried out for you. Ask us for details.
