Quick answer

What is legionella training?

Legionella training gives delegates an understanding of how to control legionella bacteria in water systems: the legal duties, where the risk comes from, how to assess it, and the control, monitoring and management measures needed. KeyOstas delivers it as a one-day in-company course, built around the HSE Approved Code of Practice L8 and HSG274.

Built around the HSE Approved Code of Practice L8 and HSG274
Covers the legal duty to manage legionella bacteria
Covers risk assessment, control measures and monitoring regimes
Certificate of attendance for every delegate
Legionella bacteria can grow in water systems and, if they are breathed in as a fine spray, can cause Legionnaires' disease, a serious and sometimes fatal form of pneumonia. Employers and those in control of premises have a legal duty to assess and control that risk. This course explains how. It covers the legal background, the nature and history of the bacteria and the diseases it causes, how to identify the locations and conditions that let it proliferate, how to assess the risk in different water systems, the control and monitoring measures available, and how to run a legionella management programme.

Is it right for you

Is this course right for your team?

It is for the people responsible for water systems and the legionella risk.

Right for you if…

You are responsible for water systems in a building or site
You are a facilities, estates or maintenance manager
You need to assess and control the legionella risk
You manage, or will manage, a legionella management programme
You oversee inspection, monitoring and cleaning regimes for water systems

A different course fits better if…

You need a specialist to carry out your legionella risk assessment for you
Your role has no responsibility for water systems
You want a regulated, accredited qualification: this is a certificate of attendance
After the course

Be aware of the legal duties to manage legionella bacteria.

Understand the bacteria

Understand the nature and history of legionella bacteria and the diseases it causes.

Identify the hazards

Identify the locations and conditions that allow legionella to proliferate.

Assess the risk

Understand how to assess the level of risk in different water systems.

Control it

Know the control measures

Describe the technical, procedural and behavioural measures that control legionella.

  • Risk assessment across different water systems
03

Controlling the risk

  • Avoidance and control measures: technical, procedural and behavioural
  • Inspection, monitoring and cleaning regimes

Assessment

How the course is assessed and certificated

Discussion-led and applied, with no written exam.

Format

Instructor-led, in-company

A KeyOstas tutor delivers the day at your premises, and your own water systems can be used as the example.

Assessment

Discussion-based

Understanding is built and checked through discussion rather than a formal exam.

Certificate

Certificate of attendance

Every delegate receives a KeyOstas certificate of attendance on completion.

The course builds understanding of legionella control and management. A legionella risk assessment for a complex water system may still need a suitably competent specialist; the course explains where that line sits.

FAQ

Legionella training: frequently asked questions

What is legionella?
Legionella is a bacterium that can grow in water systems. If contaminated water is breathed in as a fine spray, it can cause Legionnaires' disease, a serious and sometimes fatal form of pneumonia.
How long is the course?
One day, delivered in-company at your premises.
Who should attend?
Facilities, estates and maintenance managers, and anyone responsible for water systems and the control of the legionella risk.
What are L8 and HSG274?
L8 is the HSE Approved Code of Practice on the control of legionella bacteria in water systems, and HSG274 is the supporting technical guidance. The course is built around both.
Is controlling legionella a legal requirement?
Yes. Employers and those in control of premises have a legal duty to assess and control the risk from legionella, and this course explains those duties.
Does the course qualify me to write a legionella risk assessment?
It gives a solid understanding of legionella risk assessment and control. A risk assessment for a complex water system may still need a suitably competent specialist; the course explains where that line sits.
Will the course use our own water systems?
Yes. Delivered in-company, your own water systems can be the worked example for the day.
Is this an accredited qualification?
It is a KeyOstas course with a certificate of attendance: practical training rather than a regulated qualification.
