Quick answer

What is confined space awareness training?

Confined space awareness training gives staff a clear understanding of what a confined space is, the dangers it holds, and the safe system of work needed before anyone enters one. KeyOstas delivers it as a half-day course, used either as stand-alone awareness or as a refresher for those who hold a full confined space qualification.

Explains what a confined space is, and what the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 require
Covers the dangers: poisonous atmospheres, fire, residues, dust, heat and machinery
Sets out the safe system of work for entering a confined space
Works as stand-alone awareness, or as a refresher of a full course
A confined space can be deadly, and people die in them every year, often when trying to rescue someone else. This half-day course makes sure staff understand the risk before they go anywhere near one. It explains what counts as a confined space and what the law, principally the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997, requires of employers and workers. It works through the dangers found in confined spaces: poisonous gas, fume or vapour, the risk of liquids and solids, fire and explosion, residues, dust, hot conditions and machinery. It then sets out the safe system of work for entry, covering testing the air, special tools and lighting, breathing apparatus, emergency arrangements, communications and raising the alarm, and the permit to work. The course can be run as a stand-alone awareness session, or as a refresher for delegates who already hold a full confined space qualification, and client-specific processes and procedures can be used throughout.

Is it right for you

Is this course right for your team?

It is for staff who need awareness of confined space risk, and for those due a refresher.

Right for you if…

Your staff may work near, or need awareness of, confined spaces
You want people to recognise a confined space and the dangers it holds
You hold a full confined space qualification and need a refresher
You want a short session that introduces the safe system of work
You want training delivered in-company, using your own procedures

A different course fits better if…

Staff will enter low risk confined spaces: see Low Risk Confined Space Entry
Entry needs escape breathing apparatus: see Confined Space Entry with Escape Sets
You need to train supervisors or a rescue team: see Confined Space Supervisor and Confined Space Rescue

FAQ

Confined space awareness training: frequently asked questions

What counts as a confined space?
A confined space is a place that is substantially enclosed and where there is a reasonably foreseeable risk of serious injury from hazardous conditions, such as a tank, silo, pit, sewer, duct or chamber. The course explains how to recognise one.
Is this course enough to enter a confined space?
It is an awareness course. To actually enter, staff need full entry training appropriate to the risk, such as Low Risk Confined Space Entry or Confined Space Entry with Escape Sets.
Can the course be used as a refresher?
Yes. It works both as stand-alone awareness and as a refresher for delegates who already hold a full confined space qualification.
What does the law require for confined space work?
The Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 require employers to avoid entry where reasonably practicable, to use a safe system of work where entry is needed, and to have adequate emergency arrangements before work starts.
How long is the course?
It is a half-day in-company course.
Can you use our own confined space procedures?
Yes. Client-specific processes and procedures can be used throughout the session.
Who should attend?
Staff who may work near confined spaces, those who need general awareness of the risk, and anyone due a refresher of a full course.
Is this an accredited qualification?
It is a KeyOstas course with a certificate of attendance: practical training rather than a regulated qualification.
