Quick answer

What is confined space atmosphere monitoring training?

Confined space atmosphere monitoring training builds the skills to enter enclosed areas and work with gas monitors, detecting and monitoring problem atmospheres where toxic gases may be present. KeyOstas delivers it as a one-day in-company course covering occupational exposure levels, detection and monitoring, and practical exercises with gas monitors.

Covers the outcomes of the EH40 workplace occupational exposure levels
Explains the controls for safe working where toxic gases may be present
Covers problem atmospheres: how they occur, are detected and monitored
Practical knowledge and skill exercises using gas monitors
A gas monitor only protects a worker if it is set up, used and understood correctly. This one-day course is for people who need to develop the skills and knowledge to enter enclosed areas and work with gas monitors. It covers the outcomes of the EH40 workplace occupational exposure levels, the controls required for safe working in atmospheres where toxic gases may be present, and problem atmospheres, how they occur, how they are detected and how they are monitored. It looks at the physiological effects of problem atmospheres on the body, and works through safety procedures, safe systems of work, emergency procedures and how to respond to alarms. The day includes practical knowledge and skill exercises using gas monitors. Delegates should ideally bring their own gas monitors for the practical exercises, and the trainer will have a gas monitor available. Delegates who successfully complete the course are awarded a KeyOstas certificate of training achievement.

Is it right for you

Is this course right for your team?

It is for staff who enter enclosed areas and rely on gas monitors to work safely.

Right for you if…

Your staff enter enclosed areas where toxic gases may be present
You want them competent to detect and monitor problem atmospheres
You want them to understand occupational exposure levels and what readings mean
You want practical skill exercises using gas monitors
You want training delivered in-company, around your own equipment

A different course fits better if…

You need full entry training for low risk confined spaces: see Low Risk Confined Space Entry
Entry needs escape breathing apparatus: see Confined Space Entry with Escape Sets
You only need general awareness of confined space risk: see Confined Space Awareness
After the course

FAQ

Confined space atmosphere monitoring: frequently asked questions

What does atmosphere monitoring training cover?
It covers entering enclosed areas and working with gas monitors: occupational exposure levels, problem atmospheres and how they are detected and monitored, safe systems of work, and practical exercises using gas monitors.
What is EH40?
EH40 sets out the workplace exposure limits for hazardous substances in the air. The course covers the outcomes of those occupational exposure levels and what they mean for monitoring.
How long is the course?
It is a one-day in-company course, combining classroom content with practical exercises.
Do delegates need their own gas monitors?
Ideally yes. Delegates should bring their own gas monitors for the practical exercises, and the trainer will also have a gas monitor available.
Does the course include practical work?
Yes. Delegates complete practical knowledge and skill exercises using gas monitors.
What certificate is awarded?
Delegates who successfully complete the course are awarded a KeyOstas certificate of training achievement.
Is this the same as confined space entry training?
No. This course focuses on detecting and monitoring atmospheres with gas monitors. Full confined space entry training is covered by the Low Risk Confined Space Entry and Confined Space Entry with Escape Sets courses.
Can the course use our own equipment and procedures?
Yes. Delivered in-company, it can be run around your own gas monitors and working procedures.
