What it means

About Mental Health First Aid training

A workplace Mental Health First Aider is trained to spot the signs of mental ill health, offer first-line support and guide a colleague towards the right professional help. Mental Health First Aid is the recognised training for that role, accredited by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England.

Supporting employee mental health is part of an employer's wider duty of care, and work-related stress, anxiety and depression are among the most common causes of workplace ill health. A trained Mental Health First Aider gives a workplace a clear, confident first point of contact when a colleague is struggling.

KeyOstas has trained UK workforces in health and safety since 1984. All three MHFA England courses are available in-company, delivered at your premises for a group of your staff, or as scheduled courses.

Frequently asked

Mental Health First Aid questions

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid is training that prepares someone to spot the signs of mental ill health in others, offer first-line support and guide them towards professional help. The courses on this page are accredited by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England.

What does a Mental Health First Aider do?

A Mental Health First Aider is a workplace point of contact for a colleague experiencing a mental health issue or distress. They recognise the signs, start a supportive conversation and signpost the person to appropriate support. They do not diagnose or provide therapy.

What is the difference between the First Aider and Champion courses?

The two-day Mental Health First Aid course trains a full Mental Health First Aider. The one-day MHFA Champion course is a shorter course focused on supporting wellbeing, reducing stigma and promoting a positive mental health culture.

Are the courses accredited?

Yes. All three courses are accredited by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England, the recognised national body, and delegates receive a certificate on completion.

How often is the refresher needed?

Mental Health First Aid England recommends that Mental Health First Aiders refresh their training regularly to keep their skills and knowledge current. The half-day MHFA Refresher course does this.

Can the courses be delivered at our workplace?

Yes. All three courses are available in-company, delivered by a KeyOstas tutor at your premises for a group of your staff, anywhere in the UK, or attended as scheduled courses.
