Quick answer

What is excavator training?

Excavator training prepares operators to work a 180° or 360° excavator safely and competently — excavating, grading, loading and, where fitted, lifting. It is delivered in-company under PUWER and LOLER, with an ITSSAR-accredited or KeyOstas in-house certificate on successful assessment.

For 180° slew and 360° full-circle excavators
Delivered under PUWER and LOLER for lifting duties
ITSSAR-accredited (TOPS) or KeyOstas in-house certificate
Novice, experienced and refresher levels

Excavators are powerful, high-risk machines: under PUWER employers must ensure operators are competent and adequately trained, and LOLER applies whenever an excavator is used to lift. The course covers the machine, ground and site assessment, excavating and operating technique, and — where relevant — lifting operations. KeyOstas delivers it in-company on your own excavator.

Assessment

How operators are assessed

Assessment follows the ITSSAR standard — theory and practical, on the machine.

THEORY

Theory assessment

A theory test covering the law, machine knowledge, ground assessment and safe operation.

PRACTICAL

Practical assessment

A practical test of pre-use checks, excavating and operating technique, assessed on the machine.

On passing, operators receive an ITSSAR-accredited certificate (with TOPS registration) or a KeyOstas in-house certificate — both delivered to the PUWER and LOLER standard.

FAQ

Excavator Training — frequently asked questions

Is excavator training a legal requirement?
Under PUWER, employers must ensure operators of work equipment are adequately trained and competent. Excavator training is how employers meet that duty; LOLER also applies whenever the machine is used to lift.
Does the course cover both 180 and 360 excavators?
Yes. KeyOstas covers 180° slew excavators and 360° full-circle excavators — tell us which machine your operators use and we will tailor the course.
Do I need an ITSSAR-accredited certificate, or is in-house enough?
Both are valid. An ITSSAR-accredited certificate is independently verifiable and TOPS-registered; a KeyOstas in-house certificate is delivered to the same training standard. Choose based on what your sites and clients ask for.
How long is the course?
A novice course can run up to ten days depending on machine size and candidate numbers; an experienced-operator course is around three days and a refresher one day. We will confirm an exact duration.
Does it cover lifting operations?
Yes. Where an excavator is used to lift, LOLER applies — the course covers lifting safely, attachments and quick hitches.
How often is refresher training needed?
HSE and ITSSAR recommend refresher training every three to five years, and sooner after an incident or change of duties or machine.
Can you train on our own excavator at our site?
Yes. All KeyOstas excavator training is delivered in-company, on your own machine, in your real working environment.
