Operator training for the side loader — ITSSAR-accredited or in-house certified, delivered in-company at your premises on your own machine. Course levels for novice, experienced and refresher operators.
Side loader training is delivered in-company at three levels — choose by your operators’ experience. Durations are typical and flex with candidate numbers.
Side loader training prepares operators to work a side loader safely and competently. The side loader lifts and carries loads from its side, making it ideal for long loads such as timber, steel and pipe. It is delivered in-company to HSE’s L117 standard, with an ITSSAR-accredited or KeyOstas in-house certificate on successful assessment.
Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) and HSE’s L117 Approved Code of Practice, employers must make sure lift-truck operators are adequately trained. Side loaders are used wherever long or awkward loads are handled, from timber yards to steel stockholders. KeyOstas delivers side loader training at your premises, so operators learn in their real working environment — and you choose an ITSSAR-accredited certificate or a KeyOstas in-house one.
The side loader carries its load on a bed alongside the mast, lifting and placing to one side rather than from the front. That makes it the truck of choice for long, awkward loads — timber lengths, steel bar, pipe and board — that a counterbalance would struggle to carry through normal aisles.
Because it travels in line with the racking, it can move long loads down aisles far too tight for a front-loading truck — but operators must manage the load overhang and the truck’s length with real care.
KeyOstas trains operators at every level. Pick the course that matches your operators’ experience.
By the end of the course your operators will be able to work the side loader safely, efficiently and to the required standard.
Carry out a thorough pre-use inspection and report defects correctly.
Lift, move, stack and de-stack loads safely and within the truck’s rated capacity.
Understand truck stability, the data plate and the limits of safe operation.
Understand PUWER, LOLER and the L117 responsibilities that apply to operators.
Operate safely around pedestrians, racking, vehicles and changing ground conditions.
Meet the ITSSAR / L117 assessment standard in theory and practical operation.
The course is delivered through tutor-led theory and hands-on practical operation, organised into four areas and assessed throughout.
Assessment follows the ITSSAR and L117 standard — theory and practical, on the machine.
A theory test covering the law, truck knowledge, stability and safe operating practice.
A practical test of pre-use checks, manoeuvring and load handling, assessed on the machine.
