Quick answer

What is safety representatives and committees training?

This course prepares safety representatives, whether trade union or non-union, for the role and helps organisations establish and run a safety committee. KeyOstas delivers it as a one-day in-company course, suitable both for the representatives themselves and for those who appoint them.

Certificate of attendance for every delegate
Consulting employees on health and safety is a legal duty, and safety representatives and safety committees are how many organisations meet it. There are two routes: trade union safety representatives, and representatives of employee safety where there is no union. This course gives both an appreciation of the role: the legal framework, a representative's rights and functions, the value of a safety committee and how to establish one, and the practical tools of risk assessment, accident investigation and reporting under RIDDOR. It works equally well for the people who set representatives to work.

FAQ

Safety representatives & committees training: frequently asked questions

Who should attend this course?
Trade union and non-union safety representatives, and the managers responsible for appointing representatives and establishing a safety committee.
How long is the course?
One day, delivered in-company at your premises.
What is the difference between a union and a non-union safety representative?
Trade union safety representatives are appointed by a recognised trade union under the 1977 regulations. Where there is no union, representatives of employee safety can be elected under the 1996 consultation regulations. The course covers both routes and how their functions differ.
Is consulting employees on safety a legal requirement?
Yes. Employers have a legal duty to consult their employees on health and safety. Safety representatives and safety committees are a common way of meeting that duty.
Does the course cover RIDDOR?
Yes. It covers the definition of a workplace accident, accident investigation, and the accident reporting requirements under RIDDOR.
Can the course be tailored to us?
Yes. The programme can be made bespoke to reflect your own organisation and the way it consults its employees.
Is this course just for the representatives?
No. It is equally useful for the managers who appoint representatives and who set up and run the safety committee.
Is this an accredited qualification?
It is a KeyOstas course with a certificate of attendance: practical training rather than a regulated qualification.
